In the bustling city of Shanghai, a unique space is allowing K-pop enthusiasts to step into the shoes of their idols, if only for a few hours. Chen Go, an "idol experience center," offers fans a chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Korean pop music and culture.
Founded by entrepreneur Chen Rong, herself a K-pop devotee, Chen Go provides a complete idol makeover. Visitors can choose from a wardrobe of over 200 outfits, some sourced directly from South Korea, others tailor-made to capture the K-pop aesthetic. Beyond attire, the center offers hair and makeup services to complete the transformation.
More than just dressing up, Chen Go is designed to create a fully immersive environment. The studio features meticulously crafted sets reminiscent of backstage dressing rooms and popular South Korean music show stages. Guests can dance to K-pop hits, practice choreography, and even simulate fan meet-and-greets, capturing photos and videos of their "idol" persona.
For approximately $45, visitors can access a full package that includes outfits, accessories, and styling. This experience attracts a diverse clientele, with about 40 people visiting daily, including locals and tourists from countries like Russia, Japan, and South Korea.
One customer, Shirley Chen, a 28-year-old who traveled from Ningbo, shared that Chen Go allows her to realize childhood aspirations of becoming a dancer and performer, dreams that were once put aside for more conventional career paths. This sentiment echoes the appeal of the center – providing a joyful outlet for fans to connect with their passion.
The concept for Chen Go evolved from Chen Rong's initial idea for a photo studio themed around Korean school life. Expanding on this, she incorporated meet-and-greet and backstage setups, eventually realizing the potential for a comprehensive K-pop idol experience. Looking ahead, Chen Go is expanding its facilities, planning to double in size and introduce new features like guest appearances by social media influencers and a stage equipped with a projector, further enhancing the immersive experience for K-pop fans.
