Babae at Baril film of Janine Gutierrez in which she won best-actress has this indie movie vibe and also the story, that's dark and also mind-boggling, not for everyone's taste but technically how the film was done was really a great job that's why the director (Rae Red) also bagged the best director in the QCinema 2019.

After being pushed to the edge most of her life, a girl discovers how much power owning a gun can give her and decides she’s had enough of being the underdog.

Janine Gutierrez stars as a saleslady in a local department store. Her everyday life is composed of an exhausting commute home and a Manager who always seems to have something to say about her physical state. When she finally gets home, there's no one there but her roommate who couldn't care less about her. 

All that is about to change when she finds a peculiar looking gun right on her doorstep. Her life instantly changes as she feels she can do anything she wants, talk back to whomever she wants, and even hurt anyone she wants. 

The film stars Janine Gutierrez, Felix Roco, Elijah Canlas, JC Santos, and Sky Teotico with special participation of Ruby Ruiz, Allan Paule, and Archie Adamos and will be shown in selected cinemas from October 15 to 22, 2019. 

Babae at Baril is director Rae Red’s sophomore feature and first solo directorial effort. The movie tackles how it is like to be a woman in a world of violence and masculinity. 

Babae at Baril is one of the three recipients of production grants amounting to P1.5 million each from QCinema. The movie will be competing along with Glenn Barit’s The Cleaners and Arnel Barbarona’s Kaaway sa Sulod, and against entries from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, and China. 

QCinema 2019 runs from October 13 to 22 and will be screening films at Gateway Mall, Ayala Trinoma, Robinsons Galleria, UPFI Cine Adarna, Cinema ’76 Anonas, and Cinema Centenario in Quezon City.

David Licauco & Shaira Diaz Lead Stars in the Movie ‘Because I Love You’

After the successful Magpakailanman tandem of David Licauco & Shaira Diaz, the chemistry unleash and then was given a GMA News & Public Affairs show ‘One Hugot Away’. 

From television then an online show, now the tandem of David & Shaira or the fans calling them ShaiVid. They were given their first movie stint as a lead stars via “Because I Love You” produced by ALV Films. 

In the movie, Shaira plays the feisty, street-smart firefighter who proudly continues her departed dad’s heroic legacy. David Licauco on the other hand plays a rich polo player Rael. In the film, at first he is in denial that he will fall for someone like Summer because she has a strong personality and she's very independent, but as he gets to know Summer more, things change and soon, he will find himself falling for someone completely opposite his personality. 

Because I Love You is produced by ALV Films under Arnold Vegaria. “Because I Love You” is the second film released by ALV Films. The cast also includes Michelle Dee, Timothy Lawrence Yap, Martin del Rosario and Samantha Lopez, among others and it’s already showing in Cinemas Nationwide.

Smart gives all the feels this Valentine season with online series 'FindHer'

Smart is giving everyone all the feels this Valentine season as it debuts ‘FindHer,’ its first online series that premieres on YouTube on Feb. 9, Saturday. 

Produced by Smart in partnership with Epicmedia and Bent & Buzz, the seven-part romantic-comedy online series revolves around three individuals who contend with the complexities of love in a time of smartphones and dating apps.

The series features actors Barbara Ruaro as Lia, Dionne Monsanto as Aika, and Vance Larena as Gabe. FDCP Announces List of Film Ambassadors

Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will celebrate the triumphs of the Filipino filmmakers by hosting the FDCP Film Ambassadors’ Night on February 9, 2018 at Sampaguita Gardens, Quezon City. 

This is to give recognition to the Filipino filmmakers who brought honor to the country by winning in various international film festivals last 2017.

Aside from the citations, FDCP will also name the A-Lister winners from the top international film festivals, as well as the Camera Obscura awardees, the highest Artistic Excellence Award given by the Agency for outstanding members of the film industry. Previous recipients of the Award include Directors Brillante Mendoza and Lav Diaz, and actors Jaclyn Jose, Allen Dizon, and Teri Malvar.

This event will also serve as a venue for fellowship and an opportunity for the filmmakers and industry movers to meet again and build a creative ground for future projects and collaboration.

Marvel's new onscreen success Ant-Man in Manila, Globe customers gets first viewing privilege

Rovio Entertainment announced today that Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis will direct “Angry Birds,” the upcoming 3D CG-animated film based on Rovio’s bestselling app. The film is being produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder and executive produced by David Maisel; the screenplay is by Jon Vitti. The movie is slated for a July 1, 2016 release and will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures (including the Philippines).

Reilly and Kaytis are both animation veterans, making their directorial debuts with “Angry Birds.” Kaytis began his career as an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In his 19 years at Disney, he served as animation supervisor of “Tangled” and the follow-up short, “Tangled Ever After.” He also conceived and oversaw the end credits sequence of “Wreck-It Ralph” and animated on that film; in addition, he was the supervising animator of the character Rhino in “Bolt.” Kaytis also animated on the upcoming film “Frozen” and the Oscar®-winning short, “Paperman.”

Reilly joined Sony Pictures Animation in 2003 as a storyboard artist, contributing to the films “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “Hotel Transylvania” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.” He was a director and Head of Story on several development projects at Sony Pictures Animation. Previously, Reilly was a storyboard artist on films including “Spider-Man 2” and “The Iron Giant.”

Commenting on the announcement, Rovio Entertainment CEO Mikael Hed said, “I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise. The upcoming movie marks Rovio’s first foray into feature films, although fans have already been introduced to the Angry Birds world with the weekly “Angry Birds Toons” animated series. At the end of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor’s adopted brother Loki is taken back to Asgard by Thor as a prisoner, after trying to take over the world. From this starting point, producer Kevin Feige, executive producer Craig Kyle, the screenwriters and a large team at Marvel sat down to look at where Thor’s story should go next. Screenwriter Christopher L. Yost explains, “We really wanted to look at how you could escalate the story personally for him and push things to the next level in terms of conflict.”

Director Alan Taylor, describing Thor’s journey, says, “In the first film, we saw Thor go from being an impetuous prince to taking his first steps towards maturing and growing up, and in our film that life story continues. He’s moving closer to actually claiming the kind of power that comes with Odin. He’s becoming not just a man, but potentially a king as well. In this story, as Thor matures and deepens, he has to give some things up and suffer.”

To create the conflict, the filmmakers give Thor a worthy adversary—the villainous Malekith. Introduced in June 1984 in issue #344 of Thor, Malekith is leader of the dark elves, who inhabit Svartalfheim, one of the Nine Realms. After waging war with the Nine Realms, and being defeated by Asgard, the dark elves were considered to be extinct. But Malekith put his planet and the surviving dark elves into hibernation for many thousands of years, until a calculated time when he was ready to avenge the universe and turn light once more into darkness. Malekith and the dark elves will prove to be formidable enemies with a violent and personal history with Asgard.

In creating “Thor: The Dark World,” Marvel filmmakers worked diligently to respect the film’s origins and the legions of comic book fans it spawned and worked carefully to endear and excite not only those fans but fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.

She planned every shooting day using Story Boarding technique which she does herself that makes her really impressive. After Star Cinema's phenomenal success of distributing Jackie Chan's last major film "Chinese Zodiac," Philippines' leadingis film production is again ready to distribute another international film. Inline to Star Cinema's 2nd Decade Anniversary (#StarCinema20), Star Cinema plans to distribute non other than Filipino's favorite Asian heartthrob Mario Maurer's "Pee Mak Phra Khanong" - the acclaimed highest grossing film of Thailand, beating the "Ong Bak" movie.

Phi Mak Phra Khanong is a 2013 Thai romance,horror and comedy film. The story is an adaptation of the Mae Nak Phra Khanong legend of Thai folklore.

The highest-grossing domestic film in Thai history — with an estimated box office of ฿1 billion (US$32.1 million) — Pee Mak has been on release in Hong Kong for 40 days, a rare feat in such a competitive exhibition market.

Hong Kong distributor Panasia Films Ltd 泛亞影業有限公司 announced that Thai horror comedy Pee Mak พี่มาก...พระโขนง has surpassed the HK$10 million (US$1.29 millon) milestone at the Hong Kong box office.

The Philippine playdate is not yet confirmed by this time. Surely Mario Maurer's fans can't wait for this announcement to come. For all we know Mario Maurer captured Filipinos consecutive times with his films - "Love of Siam," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and Star Cinema's very own "Suddenly It's Magic" in which Erich Gonzales was teamed up with Mario.

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a professional Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot MU legacy James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.
The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.
“We wanted this to be Mike Wazowski’s story,” says Dan Scanlon, director Disney/Pixar's animated comedy “Monsters University.” “His drive and sincerity are so compelling—his quest so personal.”
From the beginning, Scanlon was drawn to the idea of self-discovery. “Setting the story at the time when Mike is first venturing into the world by himself allowed us to delve into his journey of self-awareness, experiencing with him the fun, the ups and downs, the friendships and the revelations that come with growing up. It’s during these years, whether in college or not, that we tend to learn who we are. And it’s not necessarily who we thought we were.”
“Mike is self-assured, unwavering in his convictions,” says producer Kori Rae. “But Mike’s dream—unlike Mike—is outsized. It never occurs to him that he might not realize his goal. But we don’t always get what we want, including life-long dreams. It’s perhaps the hardest lesson for any of us to face, but it’s the benchmark of maturity.”
Pete Docter, director of the original “Monsters, Inc.,” played a key role in developing major themes in “Monsters University.” “One theme that came out really early was this idea that when one door closes, another door opens,” says Docter. “Doors were so central to the first film visually, so this idea really stood out. We realized that the main message in so many movies—especially those for kids—is, ‘If you try hard enough and believe in yourself, you can do anything!’ And that’s not a bad message, but it’s not always truthful. What do you do when your dream is crushed?”
According to the filmmakers, Mike’s story—and the fact that he doesn’t accomplish what he sets out to do—not only makes the story more interesting, it makes it more relatable. “A big part of this film is facing reality,” says story supervisor Kelsey Mann. “Sometimes it’s harsh and unfair, but that’s okay. It just means you were meant to do something else, something that ultimately might be more rewarding.”
Executive producer John Lasseter agrees. “College is the time when we all have so much optimism and confidence that we can change the world. We have dreams and goals. We’re unstoppable. And then reality sets in and we start hitting closed doors. It’s what you do when you hit a closed door—it’s what you do when your dream is shattered that really formulates who you are.”
Scanlon believes the key to figuring these issues out is often revealed through the relationships we form. “No matter how hard we try, we can’t do it alone. Nobody can. So we turn to others—and they turn to us—and we really start working on what we’re going to be. It really does take a village, I think. The tricky part is putting together the right team.”
Opening across the Philippines on June 26 in Disney Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “Monsters University” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Columbia Pictures’ White House Down is the new action film from blockbuster director Roland Emmerich, whose films, includingIndependence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, have taken in more than $3 billion worldwide.
His latest film is an action movie on an epic scale starring the most recognizable home on the planet, which is very familiar territory for Emmerich. “Actually, that was the one thing holding me off – I wondered, ‘Can I really do the White House again?’” laughs the man who had aliens blow up the building in Independence Day and sent the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy through it in 2012. “Ultimately, I wanted to tell this story because it features strong characters and a very different and unusual narrative, combining action elements with those of a political thriller of worldwide significance.”
In White House Down, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save his daughter, the president, and the country.
“Obviously, Roland likes to play with symbols and icons,” says producer Bradley J. Fischer. “If you look at the content of the films and the storytelling, his films are big event movies that unfold over a worldwide scale, but they’re also about breaking down ivory towers of one form or another. So, sure, he’s destroyed the White House before, but it’s never been the centerpiece of the film – both in the plot and in the underlying storytelling – the way it is here.”
“This is really a global story,” says producer Harald Kloser, who previously worked with Emmerich as a writer and producer on 10,000 BCand 2012, and composed the music on those films as well as Anonymous and The Day After Tomorrow. “If anybody takes over the White House, they’ll have access to the world’s largest weapons arsenal. A takeover of the White House would for sure trigger a global crisis with unimaginable consequences.”
“When I started this project, I was excited to try to bring back the type of action movie that I grew up with: the ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances having to rise to the occasion,” says screenwriter James Vanderbilt. “Part of the excitement for me was the inherent mystery of the White House. It’s ironic – here’s the most famous, the most iconic building in the world, and yet it remains a place of great mystery for so many people. In that way, it was a perfect setting for an action thriller, because the building always brought that element of surprise.”
Vanderbilt says that Emmerich was a perfect choice for director. “The biggest thing we were able to do right off the bat was get Roland,” he says. “He understands innately how to make this film big, explosive, huge – but also tight and contained, in one location. He focuses first and foremost on story, on the emotional connections between the characters. I think that’s the secret to Roland that nobody realizes: he’s a very emotional director. His stories are all rooted in emotion. If you look at Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, both of those movies are about people trying to reconnect with each other in the face of tragedy. So what was so great about watching him attack the movie was he was always asking, ‘What does Cale want?’ And for Cale, everything is about getting back together with his daughter.”
“When you work on a film with Roland, 5% of the conversations are about the big images and 95% are about what drives the characters, who they are, details about where they come from, where they want to go, who they want to be,” says Kloser. He also notes that once filming begins, Emmerich’s filmmaking skills shine. “I’m always impressed by how he composes his images and how much detail he puts in. When you see it on screen, you see the layers and the depth of his images – which is also a testament to our fabulous director of photography, Anna Foerster. This movie became an action movie with a beauty that I can say hasn’t been done before.”

DiCAPRIO, A DARING ROMANTIC HERO IN “THE GREAT GATSBY”

Director Baz Luhrmann says he knew all along which actor he'd like to play Jay Gatsby in his reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, “The Great Gatsby” from Warner Bros. “Really, it wasn’t difficult to think of someone! Hmmm, I don’t know—complex, romantic, dark, glamorous, great actor…”

Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom Luhrmann had worked on “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet,” and whom Luhrmann counted as a friend and collaborator, was the obvious choice.

“I’d read the book in junior high school and I was very moved by the story,” says DiCaprio of the project. “When I picked up the novel again, it was when Baz had handed me a copy and said, ‘I’ve got the rights to this.’ It was a very daunting concept; there was a responsibility to make a memorable film that will be forever connected with one of the greatest novels of all time.”

At first, everything we know about Gatsby is drawn from “the bizarre accusations that flavored the conversations in his halls”—he is the fabulous but mysterious party-giver, the man who drifted “coolly out of nowhere to buy a palace on Long Island,” who opens the towering doors to that palace each and every weekend to anyone and everyone, but who no one has actually met. That is, until he invites his new neighbor and the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), to one of his lavish parties. This begins a chain of events through which Gatsby will ultimately reveal and be ruined by his romantic obsession, Nick’s cousin, “the golden girl” Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).

“What is eventually revealed is that Gatsby grew up poor. When he was younger, Gatsby had this grand vision for his life. And then, one day, he happens to fall in love with this girl, Daisy,” says Luhrmann. “He’d known other women, so he thought he might just take what he could get from her and go off to the war, and that it’d be nothing. But she’s this extraordinary girl and he gets hooked. He goes away to the war, and she promised to wait for his return, but then the rich and powerful Tom Buchanan sweeps in and steals her away. Gatsby loses his girl, comes back from the war penniless, and so begins his quest to erase and then repeat the past more in line with that grand vision he has always had for himself.”

Gatsby hopes to win Daisy back by “making something of himself.” His entire existence—the ostentatious mansion, the extravagant parties, the library full of books he’s never read, the hundreds of silk shirts he’s never worn, the flashy fast car—is an accumulation for which he cares not, but with which he intends to recapture Daisy’s heart.

“Gatsby is an incredible character to play,” acknowledges DiCaprio. “I think he’s very much the manifestation of the American dream, of imagining who you can become… and he does it all for the love of a woman. But even that is open to interpretation: Is Daisy just the manifestation of his dreams? Or is he really in love with this woman? I think that he’s a hopeless romantic but he’s also an incredibly empty individual searching for something to fill a void in his life.”

DiCaprio sought to bring new depth and an arresting darkness to his version of Gatsby—a version closer to the character in the novel. “When James West first saw footage of Leonardo as Gatsby, he said, ‘Now, this is Gatsby, Gatsby’s dark obsession, his absolutism,’” says Luhrmann, who adds, “He’s the Gatsby who will not let anyone rewrite the script he has written for his life.’”

Although Gatsby is a tragic figure, his “incorruptible dream” and his commitment to that dream, are what ultimately make him inspiring, “worth the whole damn bunch put together” in Nick’s eyes. “Nick realizes that Gatsby, for all his flaws, is ‘great’ because Jay Gatsby has a gift for hope that is unparalleled; even if it is ultimately out of reach or doomed, his purpose is pure and real,” says co-screenwriter Craig Pearce.

“Characters like Gatsby are inherently wedded to tragedy,” Luhrmann observes. “What they seek to attain is unattainable. And they don’t change. We know that Fitzgerald was a fan of Joseph Conrad’s `Heart of Darkness' (1899), which has that Orpheus-like structure where an innocent journeys into the underworld and meets an iconic figure; the iconic figure, in the case of Gatsby, doesn’t transform, he lives and dies with ‘Daisy’ on his lips. In the process though, he inspires us mere mortals to be better, to transform ourselves, to look for a purposeful life. And Nick does. Nick begins the story turning his back on his artistic inclinations in order to focus on making money on Wall Street, but ultimately comes to the realization, through finally writing a story about this guy Gatsby, that he, too, must pursue a meaningful and purposeful life, as Gatsby did.”

And what is it that Nick gives to Gatsby?

“I think Nick is Gatsby’s only real friend in this world,” says DiCaprio. “And that’s shocking to Gatsby… he has no real friends. Nick is the one guy who actually takes an interest in him as an individual, and not as this sort of mega rich spectacle that is ‘Gatsby.’”
