‘Superman’ saga continues in James Gunn’s 2027 ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Superhero enthusiasts, mark your calendars! Director James Gunn has officially unveiled the next chapter in the ongoing Superman saga, titled "Man of Tomorrow," slated to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn shared the exciting news via an Instagram post on Thursday, September 4, revealing the title and release date to eager fans.

Accompanying the announcement was a striking image: DC Comics chief creative officer Jim Lee's artwork featuring Superman alongside Lex Luthor, depicted in his classic green and purple Warsuit, with Superman holding a screwdriver. Gunn, who also serves as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Universe (DCU) Studios, clarified that while it's a significant follow-up, it should not be considered "Superman 2," but rather a crucial installment where Superman plays a major role within the expanded universe.

This exciting reveal wasn't entirely out of the blue for eagle-eyed fans. Hints about a new "Superman saga" story had emerged as early as August when Gunn discussed completing a "very, very worked-out treatment" during his appearance in the Season 2 premiere of the HBO Max series *Peacemaker*. Gunn has a history of using his social media platforms for DCU updates, having previously teased the 2026 standalone *Supergirl* movie.

The recent *Superman* film, starring David Corenswet as the titular hero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, garnered significant success, grossing $600 million worldwide with a $125 million domestic opening. Its global promotional tour notably kicked off in the Philippines last July, featuring Corenswet and other cast members at a fan event in Manila.

Gunn's extensive directorial portfolio includes writing and directing Marvel's critically acclaimed *Guardians of the Galaxy* trilogy. His career trajectory has seen challenges, including a temporary removal from *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3* in 2018 due to past controversial tweets, though he was reinstated in 2019 to complete the film after wrapping production on *The Suicide Squad* in 2021.
