Never The Strangers joins Universal Records

Breakout band Never The Strangers is the newest act to be signed by industry leader Universal Records. Thecontract signing, which happened last August 6, was attended by Universal Records Heads Executive Vice President Ramon Chuaying, Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, and Operations Director Peter Chan, the band’s manager Rico Blanco, and handler Soki Munar.

The band is now composed of Ace Libre, JP Del Mundo, Gab Palanca, Nash Ignacio.

The band’s debut album, released almost two years ago, spawned hits like “Moving Closer,” “Bago Mahuli Ang Lahat,” and “Alive.”

Aiza Seguerra inks recording contract with Universal Records

Multi-platinum recording artist Aiza Seguerra signed a recording contract with her new record label Universal Records last friday, July 11.

The signing was attended by (L-R) Annabelle Regalado-Borja, manager of Aiza, Universal Records General Manager Kathleen Dy-Go, Aiza, Universal Records Operations Manager Peter Chan, and Universal Records Head of Music Production Ito Rapadas.

Aiza is set to release a new album before the end of the year.

Last Sunday, May 4, during “ASAP 19,” Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go awarded Noel Cabangon with three record awards – Double Platinum for “Byahe,” Platinum for “Tuloy Ang Byahe,” Gold for “Acoustic Noel,” his latest release.

These albums, consistently top the music charts, contain Noel’s rendition of some of the most loved OPM classics.

On the other hand, Gloc-9 was also awarded a Platinum Record Award for his latest album “Liham at Lihim,” which included the hits “Magda,” “Takipsilim,” and “KMT.”

Recently, Gloc-9 spawned numerous awards at the 2014 MYX Music Awards.

Johnoy Danao's Samu't-Sari Album

Press Release: Dubbed as the must-have OPM album of the year, Johnoy Danao’s first mainstream album Samu’t-Sari boasts of songs that tackle love in its different faces. This is Johnoy’s first album under a major record label, and he chose Universal Records to take care of his songs.

“Releasing an album independently was a great experience for me,” admits Johnoy. “But, I realized that working with a label, gives me a chance to reach a wider audience. Limited din kasi talaga pag ikaw lang mag-isa. Kahit anong sipag mo, may hangganan sa maaabot na tenga.”

Johnoy, who has established his own strong following in his years as an independent artist, is proud to be in the Universal Records’ roster of artists, which includes OPM President Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon.

“I had a very pleasant experience working with Universal Records’ resident producer Ito Rapadas when we we were working on last year’s PhilPop album,” says Johnoy when asked why he chose Universal Records to be his first mainstream label. “Plus, I really respect the artists in the roster. They are the people I look up to. I am in good company.”

When asked what the buyers of his album should expect from the album, he quips, “Samu’t-Sari is my way of introducing my music to a wider audience. It is never about me, my face, the visuals. It is all about the music, the voice.”

Johnoy adds, “iba’t-ibang kuwento ang napapaloob sa album na ‘to. Iba’t-ibang tunog rin ang maririnig. Pero, lahat nasa iisang tema ng pag-ibig. Kasama din dito ang mga Beer at Sundo, na parehong paboritong i-request sa akin sa mga gig.”

When asked why, of all OPM songs, he chose Beer and Sundo to be included in the album, he replies, “Ang ganda ng mga kantang ‘to. Ito yung mga kanta na alam mong pinag-isipan. Ito yung kanta na minsan iniisip ko na, ‘sana ako nagsulat nito.’”

Johnoy describes the entire album as easy listening, perfect for sentimental moments or road trips.

Johnoy considers Buntong-hininga and Bakuran two of his favorite cuts from the album.

“Buntong-hininga kasi magaan, maaliwalas, at napapanahon sa init ngayon,” describes Johnoy. “Bakuran (his collaboration with Aiza Seguerra) naman at sumasalamin sa kung paano tayo lahat nagmamahal.”

Johnoy is also happy that his version of the 2013 PhilPop entry Kung Di Man is included in the album. The song, which was interpreted by Ney Dimaculangan in the festival, was 1st runner-up in last year’s PhilPop.

Ikaw At Ako, perhaps the most notable Johnoy Danao song, is also included in the album. The said song was used as theme in one of the episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Johnoy expressed pride over his Samu’t-Sari album because he added different elements in every song in the album.

He cites, “we used Tuba in Salubong, Bassoon for Malayang Bilanggo… All songs have their own individual highlights.”

STAGES has assembled five young, good looking and talented guys to form the talent management group’s boy band 5Az1. Their debut single, a remake of an Angela Boffil classic This Time I’ll Be Sweeter will be released in a few days.

5Az1, composed of Bryann, Rex, Jai, Mik, and Yang, was introduced in the TV5 singing competition Kanta Pilipinas, where they were a finalist. Since then, they have worked with some of the country’s finest musicians – most notable of which was their stint at the 2013 PhilPop Music Festival.

The boys’ recording of This Time I’ll Be Sweeter was supervised by The Company’s Moy Ortiz. Their rendition gives the Angela Boffil classic a certain updated feel, and a male point of view given to it.

During the Presscon of his Album,  Alden revealed the works they did for the Album. He admits that he did some preparations needed for the album to be at its best. He told that before he records, he must be in the best condition and have the best rest which he gives a compliment to his voice coach for that practice.

tagalog songs and two english songs, Alden proudly answered a question why does most of the songs are tagalog, - "Mas madaling kantahin, at syempre kasi pinoy tayo eh" but he added that he is also up with english songs in the future. Alden expressed gratitude for the people behind his career step success -"I really am very thankful that people went out to support me, I have given everything I have for this project." says the Kapuso star.

The Album's debut single Haplos reaches the top of MyMusicCharts, also part of the series Mundo Mo'y Akin as its love theme.

Alden also has an original sont in the album - the romantic sa Aking Tabi by Vince Katindoy, composer of Ngiti.

Universal Records continues to be the home of the best, most respected local musical acts. At this year’s Awit Awards, the label’s artists headline the list of nominees – Gloc-9, Noel Cabangon, Gary Valenciano, Sam Concepcion, Sponge Cola, Kamikazee, Parokya Ni Edgar, Ogie Alcasid, Christian Bautista, and She’s Only Sixteen.

Gloc-9 leads with five nominations Album of the Year for MKNM: Mga Kuwento Ng Makata, and for Sirena ­– Song of the Year, Best Rap, Best Collaboration and Best Music Video. The song also features Ebe Dancel.

Noel Cabangon takes home for four nominations: Album of the Year for Tuloy Ang Byahe, Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist and Best Ballad for Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka, and Best Regional Recording for Usahay.

Gary Valenciano also bags four nominations: Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist, Best Musical Arrangement and Best Engineered Recording for Send In The Clown, and Best Vocal Arangement for Overjoyed.

Sam Concepcion is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist for Kontrabida, while Sponge Cola is included in the list of nominees for Best Performance by a Group for Pick Your Poison and Best Collaboration for XGF with Chito Miranda.

Kamikazee has two nominations: Best Rock/Alternative and Best Music Video for Halik. Parokya Ni Edgar is nominated for Best Rap for Bagsakan featuring Frank Magalona, and Gloc-9.

New band She’s Only Sixteen is nominated for the debut single Dying To Meet You for Best Performance by a new group, while their Roll The Dice is nominated as Best Engineered Recording.

Christian Bautista’s First Class album is nominated for Best Album Design and Ogie Alcasid’s Kape Ka Ba is one of the nominees for Best Novelty.

The new Rivermaya returns to music scene

Iconic and multi-platinum-selling band Rivermaya makes a local recording scene comeback with the much-awaited release of their album Panatang Makabanda, under Universal Records. The album is their first in four years and their first with Universal Records.

Rivermaya is now composed of Mark Escueta, Norby David, Mike Elgar and Ryan Peralta.

Rivermaya joins the label’s elite roster of bands – Parokya Ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Sponge Cola, Calla Lily, among others.

“It's really a great honor for us, not only to become part of such a high-calibre roster, but to be given the chance to work with a company that has always championed the Filipino artist. It took a few weeks for it to really sink in. Di kami makapaniwala,” says Mark. “Finally, we're ‘home.’”

The album’s single Pilipinas, Kailan Ka Magigising, penned by founding Rivermaya member Mark Escueta, is reminder to everyone to go against crab mentality, and selfishness, especially now that another elections is within the horizon once again.

When asked how the single was chosen among the tracks recorded for the forthcomingPanatang Makabanda album, drummer-turned-guitarist Mark quips, “In the early stages of recording, this song became the initial favorite of the group. It's also a fun song to play live.  Maganda yung message ng kanta and very timely rin since election time nanaman tayo. “

Norby adds, "Hopefully our new record can take the fans to a whole new level and attract more new listeners to our songs and stories. We are all excited for what each of us can bring to the table, and soon to your ears."

When asked to sum up his Rivermaya journey from 1993 to 2013 founding member Mark says: “One of my firm beliefs is that the best part about being a
musician is the PROCESS. If you enjoy the process then all your gigs,
songs and albums will be celebrations after a great day at the ‘dream
office.’ If the process is messed up, many things can go wrong and it
can even end up as a painful experience. It has to be good for
everybody, not just one or two. Few people know, and I’m sure a lot of
my fellow musicians will agree, that one of the most important things
that keeps a band going is something that is not so musical in nature.
It’s called laughter. A band that laughs together, stays together.

O may pag-asa pa na bumalik tayo sa umpisa?

These lines are lifted from young singer-songwriter Jensen Gomez’s debut single Umpisa. The poignant song talks about a man’s longing to have a restart with his lady love. The single will be part of his soon-to-be-released album, also entitled Umpisa under Universal Records.

The song Umpisa opened many doors for Jensen, because it is through this song that Universal Records and management group Orion Entertainment discovered him.

“Umpisa is one special song for me because it is the first Filipino song I have written,” shares Jensen. “Luckily, the reception to the song has been overwhelming. I am excited to make people hear new versions of the song including a duet cut of the song.”

Jensen started his music career five years ago, playing for gigs around town, slowly making a name for himself and building his audience.

“Playing music is my vehicle to express my personal mishaps, experiences, stupidity,” says the young singer-songwriter. “I hope my music will make you feel that you are the only one who is experiencing stuff- heartbreaks, and heartaches. There is, after all, safety in numbers.”

Umpisa was also picked to be the theme song of the movie MNL 143.

Umpisa is also the title of the soon-to-be-released full-length album of Jensen, which will be launched this February 1, 8 p.m., Saguijo, Makati City. Pop act Six Part Invention opens 2013 with the release of their album Stripped and Covered,under their new label Universal Records. Six Part Invention is composed of Rey, Kaye and Tag Cantong, and Andy Dela Cruz.

Six Part Invention joins the elite roster of Universal Records roster – Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Parokya Ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Spongecola, Christian Bautista, Noel Cabangon, Gloc-9, Richard Poon, Sam Concepcion, JayR, Billy Crawford, Callalily, among others.

“To be part of the Universal Records family is really a dream come true for us,” expresses Rey. “This album celebrates many firsts for us – our debut album for Universal and our first time to take on an album concept like this. I hope people can support our album.”

Stripped and Covered includes some of the well-loved light rock tunes from the 90’s including Def Leppard’s Two Steps Behind, Bad English’s When I See You Smile, White Lion’s You’re All I Need, Europe’s Carrie, Cheap Trick’s The Flame, among others.

Two Steps Behind is the album’s carrier single, which is now available onwww.mymusicstore.com.ph and Itunes.

“The production of the album is really a labor of love from all of us in the band,” adds Kaye. “I hope this album takes everyone on a romantic musical journey.”

With his undeniable charm, wit, and down-to-earth personality, online heartthrob Kimpoy Feliciano has amassed a solid following in cyberspace with more than 430,000 followers on Twitter, 100,000 on Facebook, 100,000 on Tumblr, and more than 2,000,000 views on Youtube. This phenomenon paved the way for doors of opportunities to open for this online sensation, currently based in New Zealand.

Last Friday, Kimpoy launched his self-titled debut album, produced by Universal Records, to a multitude of supporters who packed the SM Manila Entertainment Center. The album includes the hit Ikaw Lang, which topped the www.mymusicstore.com.ph charts for two weeks and figured prominently in the MYX Daily Top 10 for almost three weeks. The song is also enjoying favorable airplay on radio.

“I am humbled and overwhelmed first with the trust and support given to me by Universal Records. I really never thought that I’d be given my own album, so nagpapasalamat talaga ako,” expresses Kimpoy. “Aside from that, I am also equally grateful to all my friends/followers that showed support during my launch. Nakakataba ng puso na maraming nagpunta at nagbigay ng suporta.”

Aside from Ikaw Lang, the album also includes Kimpoy’s rendiitons of Ngiti, Right Next To Me, I’ll Be Your Hero, Una at Huling Mamahalin, and Alipin, which he dedicates to all his followers. The album, produced by multi-platinum producer Ito Rapadas, comes with a DVD of all the album’s music videos.

Four years ago, Kimpoy’s family decided to migrate to Dunedin, New Zealand. Just like any kid in his situation then, he had no choice but to oblige in his family’s decision to move to a new place, away from his other family, friends, and classmates.

“It was very hard for me when my family decided to move to Dunedin. I had to leave everyone behind. When we left for Dunedin, it was one of the saddest days in my life,” says the 19-year-old Kimpoy, who is currently a second year Business Management Student in University of Otago. “Who would have known that because of that sadness, I would connect to more people in the Philippines through social media? Talagang everything happens for a reason and I am blessed that I have friends from everywhere now. Talagang no boundaries.”

The support of these new friends made Kimpoy one of the most influential Filipinos on Twitter, according to social media analytics site Klout.com. He ranked third in the survey, where he is the lone non-TV star.

Kimpoy graced the cover of the September issue of Pinoy Song Magazine, which is his first magazine cover. 

He bagged the 2012 Globe Tatt Awards’ Thought Mover Award for his nuggets of wisdom. He also received the Best Viral Video Award from MEG Magazine yesterday.

He was adjudged number one Youtube Leader in the 4^th Annual Shorty Awards, besting other local and international celebrities. The awarding was held in New York, USA. He was also Peace Ambassador earlier this year by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.

Kimpoy is also the most followed Twitter user in New Zealand.
