J-pop idol Kenshin Kamimura found guilty of indecent assault in Hong Kong

A notable verdict recently emerged from a Hong Kong court, finding former J-pop idol Kenshin Kamimura guilty of indecent assault. This development, which occurred on Wednesday, August 13, has drawn significant attention.

The 26-year-old artist, formerly of the six-member group ONE N' ONLY, was accused of the assault on his interpreter, identified only as "X," during a celebratory dinner in Hong Kong's Mong Kok district following a fan event on March 1.

Despite pleading not guilty in April and opting not to testify during the July trial, the court proceeded with its findings.

Magistrate Peter Yu, overseeing the case, firmly stated that Kamimura’s actions displayed "obvious disrespect towards women" and contained a "sexual undertone," deeming such conduct worthy of condemnation.

According to the victim's testimony in July, Kamimura sat beside her during a toasting session at the dinner and began repeatedly brushing and patting her thigh. She further recounted that he then suggested they visit the bathroom together, asking in both Chinese and Japanese if she understood his meaning.

When she declined his suggestion, clearly stating, “If you want to go, you can go by yourself,” she attempted to move away for tea. However, X testified that Kamimura blocked her path and reiterated his request for her to accompany him outside, which she again refused.

After she returned to her seat, Kamimura reportedly rejoined her, apologized, and said, "Forget what just happened." Yet, X detailed that he then inquired about her relationship status and marriage plans before brushing her inner thigh with the back of his right hand approximately two to three more times, despite her visibly shrinking away.

Kamimura’s lawyer presented a mitigation argument, suggesting his client had no intention to coerce or threaten, and that alcohol might have impaired his judgment. Ultimately, the court opted for a financial penalty over imprisonment, issuing a fine of HK$15,000 (approximately $1,923 USD).

Upon hearing the sentence, Kamimura was observed embracing his court translator, while a few fans in the public gallery were visibly emotional. Outside the courtroom, dozens more waited as he departed without making any statements. The magistrate also highlighted that Kamimura has already faced significant consequences, including his immediate termination by his company and forced departure from the band.
