Thirty years after its original release, Eraserheads' groundbreaking album 'Cutterpillow' is getting a fresh, contemporary update. A roster of exciting young and rising talents in the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene has come together to reimagine the tracks that defined a generation.
This tribute project is spearheaded by Offshore Music, the independent record label founded by Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia. The label is releasing a new album featuring these modern interpretations, offering a new perspective on the classic songs.
Leading the charge is Pinkmen with their richly harmonized take on "Ang Huling El Bimbo," arguably one of the band's most beloved hits. But the tribute doesn't stop there; it features diverse interpretations across various genres.
Listeners can expect offerings like Diego's Scenes and Ligaya Escueta's emo-infused version of "Back2Me," Elton Clark's synth-pop rendition of "Torpedo," and Carousel Casualties' spin on "Walang Nagbago," among other unique takes that push musical boundaries.
Ely Buendia, CEO of Offshore Music, emphasized the creative freedom given to the participating artists. "We didn't set any parameters," he stated. "We just told the artists that it was a tribute album, and they can interpret it as they see fit."
Buendia added that this approach resulted in a natural balance, with some artists dramatically changing the song's feel while others stayed closer to the original, adding their own signature touches. He expressed confidence in the artists' judgment to enhance the original material or provide a fresh sonic appeal for a new listener base.
The album also features JUICEBOX's lively "Overdrive," Pixie Labrador's "Lilith Fair"-flavored "Fill Her," ALYSON's sleek city pop version of "Huwag Mo Nang Itanong," ena mori's dramatic reworking of the title track "Cutterpillow," and Amateurish and Stef Aranas' dynamic rendition of "Superproxy."
Further contributions include "Waiting for the Bus" by MIMI and Eliza Marie, "Fine Time" by Sansette, "Kama Supra" by Seedy and the Years, "Slo Mo" by GundamFunk, "Paru-Parong Ningning" by Her Name is Noelle, "Poorman’s Grave" by Grave Aviators, and "Yoko" by neytan.
An additional reprised version of the track "Overdrive" is also included in the release.
All these reimagined classics are now available globally on major digital music platforms, distributed through Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment.
Beyond the music itself, Offshore Music plans to give fans a peek behind the curtain by releasing behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions. These videos are scheduled to start appearing on YouTube beginning June 6.
'Cutterpillow,' released in 1995, stands as Eraserheads' third studio album and is widely celebrated as one of their most impactful and successful records throughout the band's storied career. The iconic group features Ely Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Raimund Marasigan, and Buddy Zabala.
In related news, the band's much-anticipated Electric Fun Festival reunion show, initially set for May 31, has been rescheduled and is now planned for October 18.
