Tin Gamboa asks listeners to leave junior jocks alone as ‘Boys’ Night Out’ ends

A recent shake-up in the airwaves has seen the long-running Magic 89.9 staple, "Boys' Night Out" (BNO), officially sign off. Amidst the flurry of reactions, co-host Tin Gamboa has issued a heartfelt plea to the show's dedicated listeners: to spare the junior jocks from any negative feedback.

Gamboa took to Threads, emphasizing that these newer talents are "good kids" who found themselves caught in a difficult situation. She highlighted that they were reportedly utilized as "pawns," pressured to secure sponsorships – a task even senior jocks weren't typically given – and placed in primetime slots without adequate preparation. According to Gamboa, the junior jocks are not to blame for the show's cancellation, stressing that any anger directed their way is fundamentally "misdirected."

The "misdirected" sentiment, as inferred from Gamboa's interactions online, seems to stem from a deeper frustration regarding the abrupt conclusion of BNO and criticisms leveled at the station's program director, Sarge Capulso. Gamboa previously indicated that Capulso was the sole reason for her departure from Magic 89.9, notably labeling him a "diehard Duterte supporter."

Tensions reportedly escalated in March when Capulso intervened during a discussion about former President Rodrigo Duterte, deeming it "highly divisive and very one-sided" following reports of his alleged International Criminal Court arrest. While hosts DJ Tony Toni, Tin Gamboa, and DJ Slick Rick asserted they were simply reporting on current events, encouraging diverse viewpoints, and reflecting societal conversations, Capulso's directive reportedly aimed to curb the topic.

This behind-the-scenes disagreement culminated in BNO's unannounced final broadcast on September 30. The hosts themselves were taken by surprise, expecting to have a proper farewell on October 2. Gamboa later disclosed on October 1 that "preventative suspension" was imposed due to her comments made earlier in the week, ultimately preventing them from delivering a final, heartfelt goodbye to their audience.

In their official goodbye message shared on the "Boys' Night Out" Instagram page, the hosts subtly referenced the "new management" for not granting them a final show. Despite the unforeseen end, their statement assured fans that the laughter, stories, and shared memories would endure, proclaiming that "the spirit of Boys’ Night Out continues to live on through each of you."

Originally airing in 2006, "Boys' Night Out" became a prominent fixture on Magic 89.9, occupying the Monday-to-Thursday 9 pm to 12 am slot. With former host Sam YG departing in November 2023, the show continued with Slick Rick, Tin Gamboa, Gino Quillamor, and Tony Toni. While the hosts have yet to reveal specifics about the show's potential relocation or the promised "Last Night Out" special episode, Gamboa encourages listeners to stay tuned for future announcements.
