Ian Watkins, the former frontman of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, has reportedly died in a UK prison following an attack by another inmate. British media outlets widely reported the news on Saturday, October 11.
Watkins, aged 48, was incarcerated at Wakefield Prison in northern England, where he was serving a substantial 35-year sentence. His imprisonment stemmed from a 2013 conviction, where he pleaded guilty to 13 severe child sex offenses.
These charges included two counts of attempted rape, the sexual assault of a child under 13, and conspiring to commit both rape and sexual assault against children. He also admitted to six counts of possessing and taking indecent images of children, alongside one charge of possessing extreme pornographic images.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to HMP Wakefield at 9:39 AM on Saturday after reports of an assault on a prisoner. Despite the rapid response of emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The official police statement, however, did not specifically identify Watkins.
Requests for further comment from Reuters to the police were not immediately met with a response.
