‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ has new spin on classic queer love story

Jennifer Lopez is making waves in Hollywood with her multi-faceted performance in the new movie musical adaptation of "Kiss of the Spider Woman," set to hit theaters this Friday. Taking on not just one, but three distinct roles, Lopez delivers a fresh interpretation of a classic narrative, following in the esteemed footsteps of Latina icons Sonia Braga and Chita Rivera.

Lopez revealed her unique approach to the characters: the mysterious Spider Woman, the glamorous Hollywood actress Aurora, and the captivating film star Ingrid Luna. She meticulously crafted a different vocal tone for each – a darker register for the Spider Woman's songs, a lighter, more hopeful sound for Aurora, and a powerful, superstar quality for Ingrid Luna, embodying a truly dynamic performance across the board.

Directed by Bill Condon, known for "Dreamgirls," this 2025 adaptation continues the legacy of a story that originated as a 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig. It was famously adapted into a groundbreaking 1985 film by Héctor Babenco and later a 1993 Broadway musical helmed by Harold Prince, showcasing its enduring impact through various artistic interpretations.

The film's poignant plot centers on Valentín Arregui, a political prisoner portrayed by Diego Luna, and Luis Molina, a window dresser played by Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, incarcerated for public indecency. Their shared cell becomes the backdrop for an unexpected romance, as Molina vividly recounts the story of a Hollywood musical featuring his beloved film star, Ingrid Luna, captivating Valentín.

Director Condon notes that this latest version delves more explicitly into the queer romance between Molina and Valentín, building on the pioneering spirit of the 1985 film which was a significant touchstone for him as a young gay man. Tonatiuh views the project as a celebration of both artistic beauty and the authentic struggles faced by historically marginalized communities, emphasizing the resilience and dignity of Latino and queer individuals, while ultimately delivering a universal message of love.
