In Indonesian band Reality Club’s world, things are stranger than fiction

The vibrant pulse of live music isn't exclusive to any one city; from Manila's bustling gig scene to Indonesia's thriving soundscapes, young people are drawn to the raw energy of live performances. Jakarta-based indie rock outfit Reality Club stands out as a leading light in this dynamic landscape.

For years, their debut single, "Is It The Answer," was the undeniable highlight of their discography. Its captivating progression, from an inviting guitar riff to spirited drumbeats, instantly drew listeners into its upbeat rock symphony. However, a flurry of more recent releases has since challenged its top spot, showcasing the band's evolving artistry.

Established in 2016, the band comprises Faiz Novascotia Saripudin on vocals and guitar, Fathia Izzati on vocals and keys, Nugi Wicaksono on bass, and Era Patigo on drums. While each member had a musical background — from performing in musicals to uploading YouTube covers or playing in casual bands — it was their former bassist who brought them all together, sparking what would become Reality Club.

Their early journey, like many aspiring acts, was defined by performances in various unconventional venues. Faiz humorously recounted their very first show: a free gig at a mall atrium where they likely "disturbed" unsuspecting shoppers who had sought peace and quiet. These raw, unfiltered performances in clubs, small stages, and "gig venues that aren’t actually venues," as Fathia described them, became their proving ground for years.

Today, "Is It The Answer" has been surpassed by other hits, and Reality Club boasts millions of global listeners, gracing major stages far beyond Asia, even reaching America. The sheer scale of their newfound popularity initially left the band in disbelief.

"We used to think they were bots," Fathia confessed, recalling their surprise at seeing statistics showing listeners from America. Nugi playfully added, "They’re using VPNs, right?" before Era confirmed, "Turns out they’re real. They’re alive!" This genuine, rapidly expanding fanbase is the truth they now live, prompting them to continue creating.

The band believes that finding one's unique sonic identity is an organic journey, not a deliberate design. "I don’t think we have a distinct sound," Faiz admits, explaining that they don't consciously aim for a "Reality Club" sound but rather let it emerge naturally from their creative process. He likens this to self-discovery: "You go through all these experiences, and then you’re like, ‘This is who I am, and this is who I’m not.’"

Their latest 13-track album, aptly titled *Who Knows Where Life Will Take You?*, was born from a month-long immersion in Bangkok. While equipped with a large studio and professional gear, the true purpose of their trip was to detach themselves from their everyday routines.

Nugi fondly recalled their schedule: studio work from 10 AM to 5 PM, followed by leisure activities like massages, exploring night markets, and enjoying Bangkok’s vibrant atmosphere. This intentional uprooting, coupled with their strong bond as a band, fostered an environment where art could genuinely flourish, proving that sometimes, stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to find your path.

Over their nearly decade-long journey, Reality Club has gleaned invaluable lessons, particularly recognizing that in the digital streaming age, community triumphs over cutthroat competition. Fathia emphasized the importance of remaining grounded while pursuing excellence: "Socializing and even asking for help from other people is so important here in the industry. We realized that we can’t do everything alone."

Era and Faiz underscored a crucial "reality" reflected in their band's name: success in music extends beyond crafting great tunes. It encompasses the vital behind-the-scenes elements like marketing, communication, and the overall business acumen. Fathia concluded that striking a balance between artistic ideals and practical business knowledge is essential for sustaining a full-time music career, providing the necessary support for the creative process.
