History has been made in the world of pageantry! The Philippines now has its first-ever Miss Grand International titleholder, with CJ Opiaza officially crowned Miss Grand International 2024.
The stunning representative from Zambales received her crown on Tuesday, June 3, during a special ceremony held at the MGI Hall in Bangkok, Thailand. This unexpected coronation follows the recent and much-discussed resignation of India's Rachel Gupta, who previously held the title.
Opiaza was initially the first runner-up in the 2023 Miss Grand International competition. She will now take on the mantle, serving a four-month reign before crowning her successor at the 2025 pageant scheduled for October.
Stepping into the role, Opiaza delivered an emotional speech, sharing a lighthearted moment about MGI President Nawat Itsaragrisil. Recalling his past comment about Filipinos being late, she playfully turned the question back, "Papa, why so late?"
The 26-year-old beauty queen emphasized that while the moment was unexpected, she believes in divine timing and being prepared for opportunity. "I know the best things happen for a reason, you just have to wait for the very specific moment. But you have to hold on and do whatever it takes," she stated, asserting her readiness and commitment to the responsibilities of the title.
She acknowledged the suddenness of her win but highlighted its significance for personal growth and its historic impact. "There are different versions and means of winning in life, but this is my golden moment, and this is a historic win for the Philippines," Opiaza shared, expressing heartfelt gratitude to her supporters.
In a moving address to her fellow Filipinos, she said, "Thank you very much for coming. This is the same level of support you gave me from before up to now. No matter what stage I’m on, I hear your cheers. That’s also how happy my heart is seeing you all celebrate our win. We’ll keep fighting."
Wearing an eye-catching shimmery gold and green gown, Opiaza's coronation ceremony included a look back at her memorable performance in the previous year's pageant. Clearly emotional throughout the event, she took her first official walk as the reigning Miss Grand International 2024.
CJ Opiaza had represented Castillejos, Zambales, in the 2024 Miss Grand Philippines pageant last September before competing internationally the following month. Her first runner-up finish was the highest placement for the Philippines in the pageant's history at that time, matching the achievements of Nicole Cordoves (2016) and Samantha Bernardo (2021).
The transition in title followed Rachel Gupta's resignation seven months into her reign. Gupta cited "broken promises, mistreatment, and a toxic environment" for her decision, while the MGI organization released a statement claiming she failed to fulfill her duties and engaged in unauthorized external activities, including reportedly refusing a trip to Guatemala.
