IN PHOTOS: BTS’ RM, V discharged from mandatory military service

Exciting news for the global K-pop community! BTS members RM and V have officially completed their mandatory military service in South Korea.

Their discharge took place on Tuesday, June 10, in Chuncheon. This marks a significant step forward as the beloved septet nears its highly anticipated full reunion.

The group had been on an official break since 2022 to allow all members to fulfill their national duties. RM and V began their service on December 11, 2023, following the enlistments of their bandmates Jin (December 13, 2022), J-Hope (April 18, 2023), and Suga (September 22, 2023).

With Jin and J-Hope already discharged in June and October 2024, respectively, the focus now shifts to the remaining members. Jimin and Jungkook are expected to complete their service on June 11, while Suga, who served as a social service agent, will finish his alternative duty by June 21. This timeframe means all seven members will have fulfilled their obligations within the month.

Under South Korean law, able-bodied men are required to serve in the military for approximately 18 to 21 months, a policy influenced by the country's history of military tensions with North Korea.

A notable amendment in 2020 allowed certain entertainers of significant cultural standing, including prominent K-pop idols, to postpone their service until age 30. This adjustment was widely viewed as a recognition of BTS's immense global influence and contribution to South Korea's soft power.

The completion of their service, coinciding with the group's annual BTS Festa celebration, paves the way for the members to potentially resume group activities, exciting fans worldwide.
