Press Release:

SUN LIFE GEARS UP TO HELP MORE FILIPINOS ACHIEVE A BRIGHTER LIFE

Sun Life of Canada (Philippines) Inc., the country’s longest-standing life insurance company, encourages Filipinos to proclaim their freedom from financial problems through its Brighter Life campaign, declaring June as Financial Independence Month.

“As our nation prepares to commemorate the day when our forefathers claimed independence for our nation, Sun Life is taking the lead in the Filipinos’ quest for a different kind of freedom - that of the financial kind,” said Sun Life President and CEO Riza Mantaring. “In these modern times, money problems keep us from fulfilling our goals and becoming the best that we can be. We’d like to change that so we can be a nation of financially independent people.”

More financial literacy initiatives for Filipinos

To help Filipinos achieve this, Sun Life has prepared a fresh lineup of fun and educational activities under Brighter Life, its multimedia financial literacy campaign. Dubbed FIT initiatives, Filipinos are encouraged to get fit by taking an online Financial Intelligence Test (F.I.T.), be fit by attending a more comprehensive Financial Independence Training (F.I.T.) session, and stay fit by being connected to Brighter Life 24/7 via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (F.I.T.). Sun Life policyholders are also about to get more fit with the Financial Independent Tomorrow (F.I.T.) Review to help you in the journey towards financial freedom.

Only 32% of Pinoys have a saving habit, Sun Life and SWS survey reveals

The Brighter Life campaign is anchored on insights gathered from the latest personal finance research dubbed Study of Lifestyles, Attitudes, and Relationships (SOLAR). “We partnered with Social Weather Stations to know Filipinos’ state of financial preparedness,” Mantaring explained.

According to the results, 39% of Filipinos try to save regularly, but only 32% of Filipinos actually have a saving habit; 10% see no need to save since their income "is not enough anyway"; and 5% would save up only for things that they want to buy.

“About 2 out of 10 said that what they earned is not enough for what they spend,” Mantaring said. “On a broader scale, according to an earlier study we conducted also with SWS, this lack of financial planning has led 9 out 10 Filipinos in the A to E economic classes to experience some kind of financial shortage in the last 12 months, whether it be for basic living expenses, their children's education, or medical and health related expenses,” Mantaring said.

To cope with their financial shortage 7 out of 10 said they would be more thrifty. “Just as the age-old saying goes, ‘pag maiksi ang kumot, matutong mamaluktot,’” Mantaring said.

“But why insist on making a small blanket work, when you can find a bigger blanket, so to speak.”

On the brighter side, 1 in every 2 Filipinos are willing to learn more about managing finances.

“This is where we come in”, Mylene Lopa, Chief Marketing Officer of Sun Life said. “We can provide them with the knowledge and the tools they need about saving, investing and insuring themselves and their loved ones,” Lopa said. “It’s time to change money habits so we can all break free from the bondages of financial shortage, debt, worry, and the cycle of financial dependency.”
