Gee Canlas: From being TV’s fastest talker to Amazing Race Philippines’ surprise frontrunner

Gee Canlas

TV host Gee Canlas impressed audiences when she was introduced in the now-defunct ABS-CBN show Music Uplate Live, where he made a name for herself as Speedy Gee because of her ability to talk really fast.

She then was given a hosting assignment in Pilipinas Win Na Win, alongside Pokwang, and Kris Aquino. The show however was axed after only a few months.

Recently, however, Gee made a surprise, bold move when she figured as one of the finalists of TV5’s Amazing Race Philippines, where she is paired with her good friend Sheena Vera Cruz.

Her inclusion in the program also showed her transformation. Since she started her stint in the business, she lost considerable weight.

“Joining Amazing Race Philippines is an opportunity that presented itself, so I grabbed it. In fact, even before this local edition, I auditioned for the regional show,” says Gee. “Pero ngayon, with a new partner Sheena who is a very good friend of mine, we were chosen to be part of the show, so thankful talaga kami.”

In the reality show, Gee and Sheena were tagged as the “reunited friends” because Sheena lives in New York. Their team became the 4th top team.

The “reunited friends” positioning served the team well because their friendship became one of the strongest assets of their partnership.

“We know each other since we were in College. We both love to dance. She is a member of the Philippine All Stars. Kabisado naming ang isa’t-isa,” adds Gee. “Pero her being anInglisera also became a problem for us.”

Gee recalls that in one challenge, where they should have the same answer to a question, Sheena mistook the word “malas” to “malakas,” which obviously made the two have different answers.

In retrospect, however, Gee feels that their sense of humor made their team last that long in the competition.

Malaking bagay talaga yung marunong kaming pagtawanan yung mga pangyayari,” admits Gee. “Pero, one thing I’ve really learned was that we were guided by two things as we joined the competition- FAITH and FATE.”

Their journey on the show, according to Gee, is something she would cherish for the rest of her life.

Any regrets?

“Nothing really. It is just that after I saw the episode where we got eliminated, I felt nasayang, andun na e. That’s the only painful part,” says Gee. “But it is something that I will never forget.”

Aside from her participation in the show, Gee has been reaping commendations for her portrayal in the independent film Melodrama Negra. Which won Audience Choice award.

“I welcome every opportunity that comes my way – hosting, acting, dancing,” enthuses Gee, who is now part of MediaNation, management of Marvin Agustin, Aiza Seguerra, David Pomeranz, among others.

TV-5 Presents The Amazing Race Philippines

The Amazing Race Philippines

Once again, TV5 is out to prove that there is more to Philippine primetime television than soap operas with the upcoming season ofThe Amazing Race Philippines (TARP).

The program is the Filipino version of the world’s most awarded and most successful reality show, The Amazing Race (TAR). Hosted by sportsman Derek Ramsay, TARP is part of TV5’s series of programs for the last quarter of 2012. It will air starting on October 29 from Monday to Friday after Wil Time Bigtime and Saturday afterTalentadong Pinoy Worldwide.

The Kapatid Network did not fail to stun mall-goers, office workers and members of the press when it launched TARP in spectacular fashion, which proved TV5’s commitment to a high level of production. Perhaps one of the most hardworking actors today, Derek is back on TARP after hosting the London 2012 Olympics in July for TV5 and AKTV. Unknown to the public, Derek and the TARP team secretly shot in different parts of the country for a full month. A self-confessed TAR fanatic himself, Derek said: “If there’s anything I can take away from this experience, it’s that I know firsthand what the teams had to do to win the PhP 2 million. There were also times while filming that I could not help but stop and appreciate just how amazing the Philippines is. No wonder everything is more fun here.”

TARP is co-produced with ActiveTV, the same production company behind the Emmy-nominated and two-time Asian TV Awards winner TAR Asia. TARP’s high-quality production value sees the collaboration of TV5’s passion for excellent Filipino programming and the expertise of the franchise’s executive producer and director,Michael McKay. Having led the TAR franchise to Emmy victory, McKay was commissioned by TV5 to helm the Filipino version’s production—ensuring the same adrenalin rush is present in TARP.

TARP is indeed the Kapatid Network’s most ambitious reality show to date. At the center of the entire production is the spirit of the 11 teams vying to be the first to hit the mat at the Finish Line. This season has an interesting mix of characters that are sure to charm their way into Filipino hearts and homes. The pairs racing for glory and PhP 2 million are: celebrity best friends LJ Moreno and CJ Jarabata, magbayaw Dayal Chowdary, Jr. and Fausto Reyes, gym buddiesMarc Duñgo and Kat Tan, amigas Jervi Lisaba and Saida Diola, reunited friends Sheena Vera Cruz and Gee “Speedy” Canlas, Alabang housewives Pam Spella and Vanessa Ishitani, mag-ama Ed and Angel Movido, mag-kumpare Boom Vergara and Cheng Enriquez, football brothers Armand and Anton del Rosario, bombshells Dani Castano and Mish Van Ruyven, and dating coupleCrystel Castro and Mykey Lacson.
