Kilig is in the air with the premiere of Single/Single Season 2

One of the most Highest-Grossing Filipino film - "It Take a Man and a Woman" will be airing on Cinema One. Reminisce the Kilig moments of Laida and Miggy on the third installment of "A Very Special Love," "It takes a Man and a Woman," airing this February 2 on Cinema One, 8:00 PM.

Cinema One, the country’s number one cable channel, is bringing the highest grossing Filipino romance film to television for the first time, with its premiere airing of Cathy Garcia-Molina’s “It Takes a Man and a Woman,” airing on Sunday (February 2).

“It Takes a Man and a Woman,” which stars the blockbuster love team of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, is the third installment in the “A Very Special Love” film series, wherein John Lloyd and Sarah reprise their roles as Miggy Montenegro and Laida Magtalas.

It follows the life of Miggy and Laida after their break up, which occurred after the events in the second film. Miggy, at this point, is in a relationship with Belle (Isabelle Daza), while Laida is now a fiercer version of herself after having lived in the United States.

When Laida comes home, she gets on board with the publishing arm of Miggy’s company, and the two struggle to co-exist in the same workplace after having broken up.

In their attempts to go against or with each other, the two fall into a series of events that lead them to realizing the real definition of true love.

“It Takes a Man and a Woman” received a remarkable critical response, even reaching the point of having its theatrical run extended. It has grossed over P400 million during its run in Philippine cinemas and over P200 million overseas.

The film was graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board and a rating of “GP” by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Bibsy M. Carballo of Philippine Star said, “It Takes A Man & A Woman answered the challenge of offering a more mature perspective, according to direk Cathy, transforming a girl and a boy into a man and a woman with the capability of love and forgiveness, beyond just the ‘kilig’ factor.”

The film was also notably a breakthrough for Sarah as an actress. Tito Genova Valiente, chairman of the Urian Awards (Filipino Film Critics Circle) praised her acting, saying, “There are gems in her performance as Laida. Note the moments when the camera catches her in doubt. See her hurting with a slightest twitch of lips. Those subtleties, not expected by this writer, is good news. This girl knows how to act before a camera.”

Movie: Palitan in theaters, May 22

Finally hitting cinemas on May 22 is Ato Bautista’s award-winning erotic thriller “Palitan.”

Set in the gritty corners of Raon, Quiapo, “Palitan” shows that in desperate times, bargains are made in exchange for heavy sacrifices.

The leads are played by showbiz scions Mara Lopez and Alex Medina. Mara is the daughter of beauty queen-turned-actress Maria Isabel Lopez and a darling of local independent films. While Alex is the son of veteran actor Pen Medina and a mainstay of the top-rating ABS-CBN teleserye “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” where he plays the characterof Diego.

The script of “Palitan” required both young performers to do very sensitive scenes. “My character is my polar opposite. The film took a lot from me. It was truly the most challenging role I had to portray not just physically but emotionally,” said Mara. “It was my first time to go bold or daring. and it was harder than I thought,” Alex admitted. In spite of the challenges,both did extremely well in this film. Mara and Alex won Best Actress and Best Actor respectively at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival 2012.

The story begins with Nestor (Alex) who is heavily in debt to his boss Ramiro (Mon Confiado), an owner of an electronics shop. One of Ramiro’s dangerous cravings is aimed at Nestor’s young, lovely common-law wife, Luisa (Mara). The love-starved and porn-tired Ramiro proposes a deal with Nestor: secretly shoot Luisa’s naked body as she bathes and give the footage to him. If Nestor complies, his debt would supposedly disappear. “Palitan” is a film that pushes the characters into the limits of power play, love, lust, deceit, jealousy and pride.

Director Ato Bautista’s treatment is fearless. He said, “I always dare myself to do new things every time I make a film… For ‘Palitan, ‘I sought to shoot the longest and most steamy bedscene that I could.”

“Palitan” makes a daring move on May 22 as it opens at the following Metro Manila theaters Shangri-La Cineplex, SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, SM North EDSA, SM Mall of Asia, SM San Lazaro, SM Manila, SM Centerpoint, SM Fairview, SM Marikina, SM Southmall, and Eastwood Cinema. It opens on the same date at provincial theaters SM Bacoor, SM San Fernando, Robinsons San Fernando, SM Clark Pampanga, Robinsons Sta. Rosa, Robinsons Lipa, SM Cebu, SM Davao, Robinsons Iloilo, and Robinsons Bacolod. The film is rated R-16 without cuts by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Every year, Cinema One give chances every aspiring film makers to showcase their talents of creating film. So if you are one of them,Cinema One is now open for entries. Prepare your portfolios and prepare your wanted film to be featured in the festival.

The producers of internationally-acclaimed and groundbreaking films such as “Confessional”, “Rome & Juliet”, “Yanggaw”, and “Damgo ni Eleuteria” are now looking for new brave, bold and original stories for the ninth installment of the annual independent film festival, Cinema One Originals.

Just like last year, the fest will be divided into two categories: “Cinema One Plus”, composed of seasoned directors awarded with a two million production budget each and “Cinema One Currents”, composed of new breeds awarded with a one million budget each.

Filmmakers who aspire to be included in the fest must submit the following requirements before January 15 (Tuesday): Accomplished entry form with 2×2 recent photo, complete script of a full-length narrative feature and sequence treatment (must be a Filipino story), resume and filmography, description of production team, and portfolio of previous works in DVD format. Submit these to the Cinema One office located at 8th flr., ELJ Communications Center, Eugenio Lopez Drive, ABS-CBN Quezon City. CINEMA ONE FEATURES PIOLO PASCUAL’S FOUR BEST ROMANTIC FILMS

Get your weekly dose of heart-fluttering Piolo Pascual films on Cinema One this month as it presents the award winning actor-singer on the channel’s Romance Central Block, Sundays at 6:00 p.m. Watch out for his films “9 Mornings”, “Paano Kita Iibigin”, “Milan” and “Till There Was You”.

The 2002 film by Jose Javier Reyes, “9 Mornings”, is a romantic comedy film featuring Piolo and Donita Rose. He plays as Gene, the workaholic obsessive-compulsive event organizer who has a tragic past that resulted to his loss of faith and belief in God. The conflict begins when his late grandmother leaves him wealth in a condition that he should complete the nine dawn-masses (simbang gabi), a religious practice he abhors. “9 Mornings” airs on January 6.

“Paano Kita Iibigin” is Joyce Bernal’s 2007 film starring Piolo and Regine Velasquez that revolves around the romance between Martee (Regine), a broke and recently unemployed single mother and Lance (Piolo) a rich and arrogant resort owner. The two meet when Martee decides to flee from the city to find comfort in Lance’s resort where Martee’s son accidentally damages an expensive motorcycle prompting her to work for Lance as payment for the damages. “Paano Kita Iibigin” which also stars Eugene Domingo, Erich Gonzales, and Iya Villania marked the first time that Pascual worked with Viva Films and the first time that Velasquez worked with Star Cinema. This airs on January 13.

The 2004 blockbuster hit, “Milan”, directed by acclaimed director Olivia Lamasan and filmed in different cities in Italy stars Piolo and Claudine Barretto and mirrors the life of Filipino migrant workers who found love and refuge in each other. Piolo and Claudine’s performance as Lino and Jenny garnered them the prestigious Best Actor and Best Actress awards in FAMAS while the film was nominated for Best Picture. According to a review on Showbizpinoy.com, “Piolo was able to convey various layers of emotions in the most effective manner all throughout the movie. You feel his sadness, desperation and helplessness in this foreign land.” The film also stars Iza Calzado, Ryan Eigenmann, and Lotlot de Leon and airs on January 20.

Piolo and Judy Ann Santos stars in their 3rd blockbuster hit “Till There Was You” directed by Joyce Bernal. A short bus ride begins the romantic film where Joanna (Judy Ann) leaves a book with her photograph in it, picked and kept hidden through the years by Albert (Piolo), a single father. Joanna was drawn into the lives of Albert and his daughter Pippa when the latter saw her by chance and remembered her face in the photograph that she always thought was her long-lost mother. “Till There Was You” airs on January 27.

Cinema One Originals 2012 proudly presents its biggest line-up for its 8th year run with 13 competition feature films; divided into two categories: “Cinema One Plus” composed of seasoned directors awarded with a two million production budget each and “Cinema One Currents” composed of new breeds awarded with a one million budget each.

Chosen through careful deliberation from hundreds of entries, these 13 films, six of which debuts as the filmmakers first feature film, hav e the potential to make names for its filmmakers, directors, writers and actors in the local and international arena.

“The festival is definitely bigger now in terms of content, variety and ambitions compared to the past years of Cinema One Originals. We have something for everyone not answered by mainstream cinema,” said Cinema One channel head, Ronald Arguelles.

Brave, bold and original, The 8th Cinema One Originals Festival line-up is composed of the following titles: For the first category, MARIPOSA SA HAWLA NG GABI by Richard Somes is a tale of an innocent woman who unravels horrible truths while in search of her long lost sister in the city starring Erich Gonzales, Alfred Vargas, Joel Torre, Maria Isabel Lopez, John Lapus and Mark Gil; MATER DOLOROSA by Adolfo Alix, Jr. is a story about a typical Filipino mother who lives a dark, shadowy life in Manila’s underground starring Gina Alajar, Cogie Domingo, Alessandra de Rossi, Carlo Aquino, Joem Bascon, and Mercedes Cabral with the special participation of Phillip Salvador andBAYBAYIN by Auraeus Solito, a unique tale of two sisters who fall in love with a man who can’t hear and speak starring siblings Assunta and Alessandra de Rossi and introducing Adrian Sebastian.

For the second category, ANG PAGLALAKBAY NG MGA BITUIN SA GABING MADILIM by Arnel Mardoquio is a story about the companionship between three escaping rebels and a young war survivor against a Mindanao war backdrop; CATNIP by Kevin Dayrit is a psychological film on two friends who despite their frequent rifts and differences find comfort in being together starring Lauren Young and Maxene Magalona; MELODRAMA NEGRA by Ma. Isabel Legarda is a dark comedy which follows the complicated and macabre lives of a woman and her ‘dead’ friends, blood-hungry sociopaths and a wealthy political family;  SLUMBER PARTY by Emmanuel Dela Cruz is a riotous comedy about a tied-up cute frat boy and three curious gays starring Markki Stroem, Archie Alemania and RK Bagatsing; PASCALINA by Pam Miras is an untypical story of a simple girl who, after visiting her dying aunt, experiences changes in her life that will push her to the edge of madness and monstrosity;  ANAK ARAW by Gym Lumbera talks about the colonial illusion of an albino who believes that he is a son of an American; EDSA XXX by Khavn De La Cruz is a futuristic black comedy film infused with original rock soundtrack. It tells the story of the reign of Three Eyes in the Philippines in year 2030 starring Epi Quizon; ABERYA by Christian Linaban, Cebu story about love, sex, and psychedelic potions which intertwine the lives of four people in one night starring Will Devaughn, Mercedes Cabral, Iwa Moto, and Nicholas Varela;PALITAN by Ato Bautista depicts lovers who find themselves asphyxiated and trapped in an erotic triangle; and MAMAY UMENG by Dwein Baltazar gives a glimpse into the life of an 84-year-old man who is alone, waiting, and praying not for long life, but for a quick escape.

Apart from these originals, the festival will give tribute to Philippine classics through the screening of three of the most important restored films that greatly contributed to the foundation of Philippine Cinema: “Oro Plata Mata”, “Himala” and “Genghis Khan”.

“Oro Plata Mata”, the 1892 film directed by Peque Gallaga will serve as the opening film for the prestigious event while the award-winning film “Himala” will celebrate its 30th anniversary through an exclusive showing of a documentary special by “Ka Oryang” director Sari Dalena and writer/editor Keith Sicat.

An exhibition programme featuring guest films will also take place in the festival to include special screenings of “Alagwa”, “Supremo”, “Jungle Love”, and “Graceland”.

The 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival will run from November 28 to December 9 at Robinson’s Galleria Movie World and from November 29 to December 4 at the Edsa Shang Cineplex. The festival’s much awaited awards night will be held on December 3 at Studio 1 ABS-CBN Main Building.

Cinema One Originals Festival Presents: Himala (Restored Version)

The restored version of Ishmael Bernal’s “Himala”, one of the country’s cinematic gems, will be screened at the 8th Cinema One Originals 2012 on December 4 at 9:15 p.m. at the Edsa Shangri-La Cineplex.

Prior to the screening, a documentary celebrating the film’s 30th anniversary titled “HIMALA NGAYON” by Sari Dalena and Keith Sicat will roll at 7:00 p.m. Multi-awarded screenwriter Ricky Lee, will be present during the event for the book signing of his “Himala” coffee table book at the cinema’s lobby which features the full screenplay of the movie with an English translation, as well as interviews with the cast and crew and more than 100 full-color photographs.

The film “Himala” was initially released for the Metro Film Festival in 1982. In 2008, it won the Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Asia-Pacific Film of All Time in the CNN Asia Pacific Screen Awards and just recently, it was screened at the 69th Venice Film Festival during a program titled “Venizia Classici” which showcased restored classic films from around the world.

“Himala” is based on a true incident on a teenage girl in Cabra Island in the province of Occidental Mindoro between 1966 and 1967. It talks about how Elsa, played by Nora Aunor, whose visions of the Virgin Mary has caused hysteria in a poor, isolated village. Right after the apparition, she started faith healing local residents.

The restoration of the eye-opening film about religion and faith healing was made possible by the ABS-CBN Film Archives headed by Leo Katigbak in partnership with Central Digital Lab, Inc. The restoration took 700 hours of restoration before it attained its High Definition quality. “We’ve always wanted to restore classics, it’s just that the cost was very prohibitive before. But over the last few years, the technology has improved, and the cost has declined. This is the 30th year of Himala and it’s a great Filipino classic we would like everyone to see,” Katigbak said.
