Lindsay Lohan comes full circle with ‘Freakier Friday’

Lindsay Lohan is set to make a highly anticipated return to the big screen, coming full circle with "Freakier Friday," the sequel to her beloved 2003 hit, "Freaky Friday." Fans have been eagerly awaiting this follow-up, which promises a fresh twist on the classic body-swap comedy.

For Lohan, who welcomed her first child in 2023, the timing for this project felt incredibly fitting. She shared at the film’s London premiere that her recent experience of motherhood allowed her to infuse authentic nuances into her character, Anna, marking the first time she’s been able to do so on screen.

The original "Freaky Friday" was a surprising box office success, grossing over $160 million worldwide on a modest $26 million budget, and has since cultivated a significant cult following. Now, two decades later, Lohan, 39, reunites with the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis to reprise their roles as the mother-daughter duo, Tess and Anna Coleman.

In "Freakier Friday," Anna is now a single parent to her spirited teenage daughter, Harper, portrayed by Julia Butters. Their relationship faces new challenges when Anna falls for Eric, played by Manny Jacinto, who is the father of Harper’s new British classmate, Lily (Sophia Hammons). As wedding bells approach, the future stepsisters, who initially dislike each other, plot to intervene.

The narrative takes a "freakier" turn than its predecessor; instead of just Tess and Anna swapping bodies, this time it’s Tess and Anna who switch with Lily and Harper, respectively. Lohan emphasized her commitment to ensuring Anna's character felt genuine and evolved for modern audiences, especially as a single, working mom. She expressed her desire for viewers to connect with Anna's journey and find relatable aspects within her story.

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the film also sees Chad Michael Murray returning as Jake, Anna's former love interest. Murray described the filming experience as a "lovefest," noting it felt seamlessly connected to the first movie and that everyone involved genuinely enjoyed their time on set.

This film marks a significant big-screen comeback for Lohan. While acknowledging the natural nervousness that comes with wanting to deliver a great performance, she shared her primary goal: to ensure audiences enjoy her work and find happiness in it. "Freakier Friday" is scheduled to begin its global cinematic rollout starting August 6.
