Q&A with Jackie Chan: How his legacy endures in ‘Karate Kid: Legends’

Martial arts cinema icon Jackie Chan is back as the beloved kung fu master Mr. Han in the latest installment of the iconic franchise, 'Karate Kid: Legends.' With a career spanning over six decades, Chan has long been a pillar in the genre, known internationally for roles like Chief Inspector Lee in the 'Rush Hour' series and his previous portrayal of Mr. Han in the 2010 'Karate Kid' remake.

In 'Karate Kid: Legends,' Chan's character, Mr. Han, takes on a new student: Li Fong, played by Ben Wang. The story follows Li Fong's move to New York City and the challenges he faces that necessitate relearning martial arts under Mr. Han's guidance.

When asked about his return, Chan cited the audience's desire to see more from the 'Karate Kid' universe, noting the success and fondness for the original film released 40 years ago. He shared that Sony presented a script with a compelling story that felt right for his return.

Finding the right actor for the new 'Karate Kid' was crucial. Chan revealed that auditions were held worldwide, seeking someone who could not only act and fight but also handle the physical demands. Ben Wang stood out with his impressive audition video showcasing acting and fighting skills. Chan was further impressed during rehearsals by Wang's professionalism, combat comfort, language skills (Mandarin and English), humor, and smartness. He even saw echoes of his younger self in Wang's energetic and tireless demeanor, quickly realizing he was perfect for the role.

Chan also spoke positively about working with Ralph Macchio, the original 'Karate Kid' star, who reprises his role as Daniel LaRusso. Having first met at the 2010 movie premiere, their second, more extended interaction on the set of 'Legends' solidified a strong connection. Chan found Macchio to be very easy to work with, understanding, and highly professional, appreciating how their collaboration blended their respective martial arts worlds.

The actor expressed enthusiasm for director Jonathan Entwistle's vision, describing him as having a "cool vibe" and anticipating a cool movie result. He particularly appreciated how the film succeeds in merging different martial arts styles, a key element of the new story.

Bringing positive energy to the film set is important to Chan, who makes an effort to connect with everyone, including the extras. He believes the excitement and energy of the entire team, not just the lead actors, contribute significantly to making a movie great, often teasing or even singing for the crew to keep spirits high.

Ultimately, Chan hopes audiences take away messages of respect from the film: respect for action, respect for martial arts, and respect for the spirit. These are the core values he aims to embed in the movie.

He encourages audiences to experience 'Karate Kid: Legends' in theaters, highlighting the story's theme of two families with long histories coming together to face challenges. He emphasizes how facing "my challenge" becomes "our challenge" through working together, a powerful and timely message.

'Karate Kid: Legends' is set to open in Philippine cinemas on May 28.
