So You’re Still Getting UTIs… Here Are 3 Things To Know About UTIs in Older Adults

UTIs are one of the most common infections in the United States, and many women have an infection multiple times throughout their lives.
Urinary Track Infection

UTIs are one of the most common infections in the United States, and many women have an infection multiple times throughout their lives. Men can also get UTIs, though this is usually due to a specific health problem, such as kidney stones. Older adults have an increased risk of UTIs:
  • If they spend time in the hospital.
  • If they live in a care facility.
  • If they have kidney problems.
  • If they have low estrogen levels.
That doesn’t mean UTIs are inevitable. Here are three things you should know to fight off bacteria responsible for infections.

How To Recognize the Symptoms

If you have a UTI, you need antibiotics to treat it ASAP. The trick is knowing the difference between aches caused by other problems and symptoms from a UTI. Here are some red flags:

  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Fever
  • Desire to urinate often
  • Feeling of full bladder constantly
  • Pelvic and lower back pain
  • Blood in your urine

The more symptoms you have, the more likely it is you have an infection.

Not All Bacteria Is Bad
When visiting the hospital, don’t be surprised if tests reveal increased levels of bacteria in your urine. The thing is, much of your body’s bacteria is good for you:

  • Helps to balance vaginal flora and prevent yeast infections.
  • Improves healing.
  • Contributes to good digestion.

So, unless you have actual symptoms of infection, ask your doctor to take it easy with the antibiotics. Taking too many antibiotics – or strong doses – often does more harm than good.

UTI Prevention Is Especially Important for Older Adults

UTIs are a problem no matter what your age; they make life miserable. As you age however, UTIs become more dangerous.

For some reason that doctor’s don’t totally understand, UTIs that target older adults can cause more serious symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, dizziness, hallucinations and even delirium. It’s obvious that you want to avoid infections to keep yourself safe.

Strengthening your immune system has a significant effect on staying healthy and protecting yourself from infections. Focus on eating natural foods that are high in vitamins:

  • Fruit
  • Cranberry juice
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Fish

It’s especially important to boost your levels of vitamin C and B6 as much as possible.

Tips for Avoiding UTIs

Here are some things men and women of any age can do to successfully avoid recurring UTIs:

  • Take a natural UTI prevention supplement
  • Drink plenty of water all day long.
  • Urinate frequently.
  • Use a doctor-prescribed vaginal cream to restore flora balance.

You have the power to protect yourself against UTIs and get rid of them once and for all. For more information or great tips, check out our other blog articles and contact our care professionals.
