MANILA, Philippines – All that Thai superstar Mario Maurer wanted when he was younger was to earn money to buy a new skateboard. However, he seemed more fated to be an actor than a famous skate artist.

Mario was very passionate about skateboarding and he never even entertained any idea that he would be in show business.

“I just want to find money for my mom. I love skateboard. I want to buy skateboard without bothering my mom,” he said during the press conference for his movie “Suddenly Its Magic” co-starring Erich Gonzales.

He got into modeling at 16 and, as a matter of course, he went on to try acting.

Now a big name in Thailand, Mario has learned to sacrifice his privacy for his career.

“Sometimes when I go out to the street or to a shopping center I have to… it’s my personal time but I have to share it with my fans,” he said.

His friends, he says, do not mind at all and have learned to adjust to his time and “understand that it’s my job.”

Nice experience

Mario shared that his first time to work in the country had been a pleasant experience for him. “I find that the Philippines is very nice,” he commented.

“I went to Ilocos and it’s very nice there also. Everybody told me that there are more places to go. But for me it’s very nice and it’s an ever more beautiful place and I really need to go there.”

He also has only good things to say about the people.

“For me it’s very nice to work here. The first day I came here, direk welcomed me to their family. All the crew, everybody not only the actors, actress but the team, the whole team they’re my family.”

Director Rory Quintos likewise attested to this.

“They had fun. They bonded very well. He’s lovable and very charming. Nakuha niya ang loob ng mga tao not just his co-actors but also the staff,” she said.

Asked what sort of magic won him the hearts of the Filipino people, the Thai heartthrob quipped, “Maybe because I am myself.”

Working with a Pinoy cast like Joross Gamboa, Ces Quesada, Cacai Bautista, Joy Viado is a “very nice” experience for Mario.

“Like I told you, we became a family. They’re also funny. We’re going to the shooting but we laugh and direk has to instruct to stop us. Direk says that we have to focus because we are laughing. We’re having fun shooting.”

That said, Mario is more than willing to do another film with a Filipino cast again. “If I have a chance, if I am available and my schedule permits.”

After staying here for a few weeks, Mario takes something very Pinoy home with him: some Filipino words. In parting, he rattled off some of these during the press gathering like “Sabehhh, sarap, mahal kita, mahal ko kayo, salamat po, maraming salamat po.”
